Annie Sullivan
Helen’s parents quickly realized that she needed her extra help. They contacted the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Boston. The principal suggested a former student named Annie Sullivan. Annie was blind and underwent surgery to restore her sight. Perhaps her unique experience can help Helen. Annie began working with Helen on March 3, 1887, and was Helen’s assistant and companion for the next fifty years.

Annie started teaching Helen words. She pressed the letters of the word into Helen’s hand. For example, she places the doll in Helen’s hand and tucks the letters of her word D-O-L-L into her other hand. She taught Helen some words. Helen repeated the words with Annie’s hand. When she was 16, Helen attended Radcliffe College for Women in Massachusetts. Annie accompanied her to school, and she helped sign her lectures in Helen’s handwriting, from which she graduated cum laude from Radcliffe in 1904.
